2019 Vintage — Toro DO, Castilla y León
Bodegas Vatan sits in the Toro DO of Castilla y León, in the Duero river valley west of Ribera del Duero. The estate’s Triton bottling is built from a parcel-by-parcel selection of old, ungrafted bush-trained Tinta de Toro vines (the Toro biotype of Tempranillo, with thicker skins and deeper colour than Rioja or Ribera expressions). The Toro DO was untouched by phylloxera, so many of these vineyards remain on their original rootstocks, with vines planted between 1900 and the 1950s.
100% Tinta de Toro, hand-harvested from low-yielding vines at 700m+ elevation on stony, calcareous-clay soils. Vinified in stainless steel followed by ageing in French oak barriques (around 12 months). The 2019 vintage in Toro was warm and dry, producing a rich, structured wine with concentrated dark fruit, ripe tannins and ageing potential.
