A history of cultural, food and fine wine firsts. The history of Boschendal, the estate and brand, is illustrious and captivating –much like itsdiverse portfolio of wines. It can be traced back more than three centuries, to 1685, when the farm, then known as Bossendal (meaning forest and dale), was granted to the Huguenot Jean le Long. It is thesecond oldest wine farm in South Africa. Another portion of the farm that would become known as Boschendal was granted to Nicolas de Lanoy in 1690, and when Abraham de Villiers bought both portions of the farm in 1710, the united Boschendal became the biggest property in the Dwars River Valley. The farm remained in the De Villiers family for 164 years and they were responsible for building the famous manor house which is believed to have had the valley's first Cape Dutch gable, in 1746.These early owners began the tradition of entertaining guests and hosting picnics on the beautiful Boschendal lawns, which is still an integral part of the estate's hospitality offering today. .
