2024 Vintage — Alto Adige DOC, South Tyrol, Italy
Cantina Tramin has been making wine in the village of Termeno sul la Strada del Vino since 1898, drawing on the remarkable diversity of Alto Adige’s high-altitude vineyards. Under winemaker Willi Stürz, the cooperative has earned an international reputation for wines of Alpine precision — and nowhere is this more apparent than in their Pinot Nero, one of the variety’s most compelling expressions in Italy.
Grapes are sourced from calcareous clay and gravelly soils at between 350 and 450 metres altitude, where cool mountain nights slow the ripening process and build complexity in the fruit. After hand harvesting, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled maceration at 26°C with daily pump-overs to gently extract colour and tannin. The wine then matures for at least six months in a combination of French barriques, larger oak casks and stainless-steel vats — a mix designed to preserve the variety’s characteristic finesse rather than impose heavy oak character. James Suckling awarded the wine 95 points for the 2017 vintage and 94 points for the 2022.
