2020 Vintage — Stellenbosch, South Africa
Kleinood is a small boutique estate on the cool southern slopes below the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, founded by Gerard de Villiers — an engineer turned vigneron — with his wife Libby in 2002. The estate’s name means “little jewel” in Afrikaans, and the production lives up to the description: a single-vineyard Syrah programme on decomposed-granite soils, hand-tended and tightly farmed for quality over volume.
Tamboerskloof is Kleinood’s flagship Syrah — fruit from the estate’s higher, cooler blocks, hand-harvested and gently destemmed, fermented with a portion of whole bunches in open-top vats, then aged for around 22 months in French oak (a small portion new) before a further period in bottle. The house style is northern-Rhône in spirit: spice, pepper, dark fruit and structure ahead of plush ripeness, with Stellenbosch warmth filling out the mid-palate.
