2019 Vintage — Stellenbosch (Lourens River Valley), South Africa
Morgenster is a 200-hectare estate at the foot of the Helderberg mountains, where the Italian-born Giulio Bertrand bought the property in 1992 with a clear vision: make Cape wines in the Bordeaux mould. The estate’s flagship Morgenster (a Right-Bank-style blend) and the second wine Lourens River Valley Red occupy the same gravel-rich Stellenbosch soils that the Atlantic-cooled mornings keep fresh enough to ripen Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc slowly.
Lourens River Valley Red is a classical Cape-Bordeaux blend — predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc — fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak (a portion new) for around 18 months. Built for early-to-mid-term cellaring and approachable on release, it’s a fluent expression of the estate’s Right-Bank ambition.
