Non-Vintage — Maule Valley & beyond, Chile
Caballo Loco (‘Crazy Horse’) was conceived by eccentric Valdivieso winemaker Jorge Coderch, who adapted the solera system of sherry production for still red wine. Each numbered edition is built on the accumulated wines of every previous release stretching back to 1991 — No. 21 draws on 26 distinct vintages — with fresh wine added and the blend evolving continuously over decades.
No. 21 is the first edition to incorporate Garnacha and Tannat alongside the established blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Carignan and Malbec. Fruit is sourced from Valdivieso’s best parcels across the Maule Valley, with each component vinified separately before blending and extended ageing in French and American oak. The wine is crafted by New Zealand-born winemaker Brett Jackson, who has overseen Caballo Loco since the mid-1990s.
