A Wine from an Unexpected Land: Syria
Bargylus is located in Syria, near the ancient city of Bargylus (today’s Jabal al-Ansariyah region), a site with wine production dating back to Roman and Phoenician times. The estate sits on the slopes of the coastal mountains, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate, cool breezes, and complex soils.
This geographic and historic backdrop makes Bargylus extraordinary — it is one of the very few internationally recognised quality wine producers in the Middle East, and certainly the most known globally from Syria.
🍇 Founders & Key Figures
The modern story of Bargylus began in the late 1990s and early 2000s:
The property was owned by the Saadé family, a longstanding merchant family with Lebanese and Syrian roots.
Rodolphe Saadé, a French-Lebanese businessman and music lover, was inspired to turn the estate into a modern quality wine producer.
Winemaking is overseen by Frédéric Lornet, a respected French winemaker who has worked in Burgundy and Bordeaux — bringing precision and European winemaking experience to Syrian terroir.
Their involvement combines local heritage, investment, and international technical expertise to craft wines that have drawn attention far beyond the Middle East.
