2023 Vintage — Montagu, Klein Karoo, South Africa
Patatsfontein is a tiny, cult old-vine Chenin Blanc project from the Keisie Valley high above Montagu in the Klein Karoo, at around 2,000 feet elevation on heavy lime-based soils. A single hectare of old bush-vine Chenin produces just 1,500 bottles a year — the vineyard’s chalky terroir and slow ripening give the wine a Burgundy-esque finesse rarely seen from South African Chenin.
100% old-vine Chenin Blanc (Steen), hand-harvested and gently pressed. Wild-yeast ferment, matured for around 10 months in used French oak with minimal intervention. A benchmark of what South African old-vine Chenin can achieve.
