2020 Vintage — Toro DO, Castilla y León, Spain
The 2020 growing season in Toro was characterised by a dry, warm summer following good winter and spring rainfall. The arid, continental climate of the high meseta — elevations of 620–750 metres — moderated daytime heat with cool nights, preserving natural acidity and extending the ripening window into October. Yields were low and fruit concentration exceptional, producing one of the finest recent vintages in the appellation.
Munia Especial is the flagship wine of Bodega Viñaguareña, crafted from 100% Tinta de Toro — a indigenous clone of Tempranillo uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Toro DO after centuries of isolation. The grapes are sourced from old vine parcels averaging 40–60 years of age, with deep root systems drawing from clay-limestone soils. Following alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel with extended maceration for maximum colour and tannin extraction, the wine is aged for 24 months in new and second-fill French oak barriques before bottling. The 2020 was awarded a Gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
