Constantia Glen THREE 2021 was made exclusively from our own grapes. It consists of 67% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Franc and matured for over 18 months in 20% new, 50% second-fill, and 30% third-fill French oak barrels. The wine was not fined and only coarsely filtered. Our new vintage impresses with its elegance and roundness, which has long since become a stylistic hallmark of THREE. It is a delight to drink even in its youth, but under ideal conditions will also age beautifully for the next 8-12 years.

Color
Youthful, with a dark garnet core that gradually fades into a vibrant magenta edge.

Nose
The THREE impresses with an aroma spectrum that gives equal space to ripe black currants, juicy plums, and dried herbs. With a little airing, rosemary notes, graphite, and cedarwood also emerge.

palate
On the palate, the dark fruit and subtle spice of the nose are reflected, integrating them into an aroma profile characterized by earthy minerality. The tannin structure is mellow and velvety, and the body and texture are full-bodied, compact, juicy, and balanced. The inherent dynamics and precision of the THREE ensure a long and precisely defined finish. Currently still youthful and vivacious, all signs already point to a great future.

Alcohol : 14%
Residual sugar : 2.8g/l
pH : 3.62
Acidity : 5.4g/l
Volatile acidity: 0.65g/l

2021 was an excellent year at Constantia Glen, thanks primarily to the cool weather and, as a result, the perfect acidity of the grapes at harvest time. The aromas at harvest time were concentrated and intense, characterized by a vibrant youthfulness that we believe will contribute to the ageability of the 2021 vintage. The relatively cool temperatures also ensured slow and even ripening of the grapes, which in turn led to optimal development of the complex flavor precursors.

Throughout the year, the now relatively old vines with root systems reaching deep into the earth easily withstood the sometimes dry conditions and ultimately produced elegant, finely spun red wines with a deep texture and mellow and persistent tannins.

The red grape harvest began on March 17, 2021, with Merlot. Temperatures were moderate during those days and even cooled slightly during the first week of April. The weather remained dry, so we encountered—quickly—textbook conditions. We finished the harvest on April 13, 2021, with Cabernet Sauvignon.
