2021 was an excellent year at Constantia Glen, thanks primarily to the cool weather and, as a result, the perfect acidity of the grapes at harvest time. The aromas at harvest time were concentrated and intense, characterized by a vibrant youthfulness that we believe will contribute to the ageability of the 2021 vintage. The relatively cool temperatures also ensured slow and even ripening of the grapes, which in turn led to optimal development of the complex flavor precursors.
Throughout the year, the now relatively old vines with root systems reaching deep into the earth easily withstood the sometimes dry conditions and ultimately produced elegant, finely spun red wines with a deep texture and mellow and persistent tannins.
The red grape harvest began on March 17, 2021, with Merlot. Temperatures were moderate during those days and even cooled slightly during the first week of April. The weather remained dry, so we encountered—quickly—textbook conditions. We finished the harvest on April 13, 2021, with Cabernet Sauvignon.
